¹⁷ The highway of the upright avoids evil;
    those who guard their ways preserve their lives.^(A)

¹⁶ There will be a highway^(A) for the remnant^(B) of his people
    that is left from Assyria,^(C)
as there was for Israel
    when they came up from Egypt.^(D)

⁸ And a highway^(A) will be there;
    it will be called the Way of Holiness;^(B)
    it will be for those who walk on that Way.
The unclean^(C) will not journey on it;
    wicked fools will not go about on it.
⁹ No lion^(D) will be there,
    nor any ravenous beast;^(E)
    they will not be found there.
But only the redeemed^(F) will walk there,
¹⁰     and those the Lord has rescued^(G) will return.
They will enter Zion with singing;^(H)
    everlasting joy^(I) will crown their heads.
Gladness^(J) and joy will overtake them,
    and sorrow and sighing will flee away.^(K)

³ A voice of one calling:
“In the wilderness prepare
    the way^(A) for the Lord^[a];
make straight^(B) in the desert
    a highway for our God.^[b](C)

⁴ Every valley shall be raised up,^(A)
    every mountain and hill^(B) made low;
the rough ground shall become level,^(C)
    the rugged places a plain.

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.’”^[a](A)
